Although forming a band with your friends from kindergarten may not always be recommended (I’m looking at you, Yoshiki and Toshi, yeah) it seems to have worked well for Bump, who have constantly stayed at the top of Japan’s fickle musical tastes with a string of #1 Oricon hits. Vocalist Fujiwara Motoo, guitarist Masukawa Hiroaki, bassist Naoi Yoshifumi, and drummer Masu Hideo have been friends for 34 years since they first all met in kindergarten. (Admirable, but they should have probably checked with a native English speaker.) The name of the band supposedly was born from a really bad English to Japanese translation - “okubyoumono no ichigeki,” meaning “a coward’s hit,” demonstrating how they aimed to accomplish what they could even through fear. While they have a few joke songs, usually as hidden tracks at the ends of albums, Bump of Chicken are known more for their simple, heartfelt lyrics set against a a pop-rock backdrop that can even veer into folk-rock territory at times. It is a great name to make fun of, but most of the band’s offerings aren’t comedic in the least. Who the hell names their band “Bump of Chicken”? One guess as to why - yeah, you’re right. 21 notes OctoBump of Chicken and “Arrows”īump of Chicken is a band that a lot of people have heard of, but few have actually heard.
